Your First Period?
No Panic, Just Sis Talk.
Hey sis, if you just saw a spot of red or brown in your underwear, take a deep breath. You are completely safe, your body is doing something totally natural, and you are officially stepping into womanhood.

What is actually happening inside your body?
Every month, your ovaries and uterus prepare a tiny, soft cushion of tissue and blood vessels (called the endometrium). When your body realizes you are not pregnant, it gently sheds that soft cushion. That is your period!
Why is the blood sometimes brown?
When blood takes its time trickling down, it reacts with air (oxygen) and turns dark brown or deep rust. It is totally healthy and very common on Day 1 and Day 5.
How much blood actually comes out?
It looks like a whole cup, but the average period is only about 30 to 40 milliliters—roughly 2 to 3 tablespoons spread over 4 to 6 days!
Why do cramps happen?
Your uterus is a muscle. It gently squeezes (contracts) to push out the lining, kind of like your stomach muscles working. Warmth relaxes these muscles instantly.

Questions you were too shy to ask
Is it normal if my period blood is dark brown or black on the first day?
Yes, 100% normal! Blood turns brown or dark when it takes a bit longer to exit the uterus and oxidizes with oxygen. It does not mean anything is wrong or dirty. Fresh blood during heavier flow usually looks bright red or pink.
What should I do if my period starts while I am in school or class?
First, take a calm breath. Every girl and teacher in that school has either experienced this or knows someone who has. Head quietly to the school nurse, wellness room, or a female teacher. Ask for a pad, wrap a sweater or jacket around your waist if there's any spot on your skirt, and change into clean clothing.
Are period cramps supposed to hurt this much?
Mild to moderate cramping is common as the uterus contracts to shed its lining. However, if your pain causes you to vomit, faint, or miss school every single month, that is NOT something you have to silently endure. Talk to Tara in the app or ask a parent to book a consultation with our adolescent gynaecologist.
Will people be able to tell that I'm on my period?
Not at all! Pads and period products are ultra-thin and undetectable under clothes. Period odor only occurs when pads aren't changed for long hours—simply change your pad every 4 to 6 hours, and you will stay completely fresh and comfortable.
